It is the upper most form of  the Municipal Organization and has more power, greater financial autonomy and wider functions as compared to other local urban bodies.

The urban area of Asansol with an area of 127.237 sq.km. resembles all typical characteristics of a Metropolis and is considered the most important industrial and commercial city in West Bengal after Kolkata.
