31st of January, 1994 comprising areas of i) erstwhile Asansol ii) Burnpur Notified Area Authority iii) erstwhile Asansol Panchayet Samity

The corporation comprises 50 Nos. of wards. Peoples representatives of each ward known as 'Councillors' at their first meeting after general election amongst themselves one member as 'Mayor' and another as 'Chairman'. Mayor nominates one member as 'Deputy Mayor' and 7 members as 'Member - Mayor in Council' amongst other members.

Function of Mayor

The Mayor presides over the meeting of Mayor-in-Council and matters discussed in that meeting are prepared under direction of the Mayor.

Function of Chairman

He presides over the meeting of Board of Councilors every month. In the meeting of the Board of Councillors all functions of corporation are discussed and resolutions are taken as execution.

Function of Mayor-in-Council

Mayor-in-Council consist of Mayor, Deputy Mayor, seven other members who are known as "Members, Mayor-in-Council". Every member, Mayor-in-Council is given portfolios by the Mayor. Every month Mayor-in-Council is meeting is held prior to the meeting of Board of Councillors. In such meetings, the Mayor presides. Mayor-in-Council primarily takes decision in the matters of administration, finance, water supply, public works, sanitation, trade license and other functions of the corporation which are finally placed for approval in the meeting of Board of Councillors. The Mayor-in-Council is collectively responsible to the corporation.
